The Lagos State chapter of Abeokuta Grammar School Old Students Association (AGSOSA) has called on all its alumni to help improve the learning conditions of the college. It said this during a visit to The Guardian for its support, as the school marks its 110th year anniversary.

While listing activities to mark the event, National Publicity Secretary of the association, Wole Shogbanmu, said the weeklong ceremony would begin with a press conference on Monday, July 16 at the school’s premises in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Other pragrammes of event would include a career talk/forum, an excursion with students to the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) and the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, among others.

The Diaspora Coordinator of the association, Sheyi Fasheun, who doubles as Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC), said emphasis was being placed on mentorship to revive the values of hard work, honesty and respect for humanity, as against the social vices prevalent among today’s youth.

Fasheun added that part of the programmes would be inauguration of new projects done by the association to renovate and rejuvenate the school. He said projects done in the past include purchase of land at the school premises, building of the school hall, construction of a mini stadium and blocks of classrooms.

“This year, however, a gatehouse, frontage, a clinic and award of scholarships will be among the projects to be inaugurated,” he said.Responding, News Editor of The Guardian, who represented the management, Marcel Mbamalu, advised the association to go beyond facial uplift of the college to ensure the revival of a vibrant curriculum, including history as a subject. He also advised that emphasis should be placed on meticulous curriculum application through supervision, training and in-service training of academic staff, as well as employment of parent-teacher association funded teachers to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in schools.
