The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to institute a probe panel to scrutinise the states and local councils’ joint account in the last 10 years.

National President of NULGE, Ibrahim Khaleel, who stated this in Abuja yesterday on the struggle to ensure autonomy of the third tier of government, said the joint state and local governments account had been subjected to massive abuses.

He said: “It is our belief in NULGE that President Muhammadu Buhari should use his administrative powers to appoint reputable auditors to carry out forensic auditing of the joint state and local governments account within the last 10 years.

This is necessary since there is little or nothing on ground in the 774 local councils to show for the huge resources allocated to states over the years.”

Khaleel, who applauded the governors of Benue, Cross River and Sokoto states for supporting autonomy of local councils in their states, condemned Plateau, Kwara, Niger, Ogun, Bauchi and Bayelsa states and other Houses of Assembly that have temporarily stepped down debate on council autonomy.

“NULGE is in every nook and cranny of the country with about one million members.

All our members in the 774 local government areas across the nation are on standby waiting for instructions to engage with members of the Houses of Assembly and to mobilise against those standing against local council autonomy.

“Indeed, the coming of Adams Oshiomhole, who is a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has rekindled our hope that the aspiration of Nigerians would be realised under his leadership.

Oshiomhole knows where he is coming from and we know he will not superintend over an anti-labour organisation.

We are planning dialogue with him where we will present our side of the issue to him and we trust he will take side with the people,” Khaleel stressed.
