Rights activist protests against recognition of Imo Assembly member
Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, at the weekend, berated the state’s chapter of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), after rejecting an award the association conferred on him.
Obaseki, who refused the award during the body’s Annual General Meeting AGM/Scientific Conference, 2018 with the theme: Effective Healthcare Delivery in Edo State, said it was too early for him to receive any award, insisting that he had not done anything tangible to merit such recognition.
He explained that he did not believe he had not done anything worthy of an award from the Association, saying, however, that the honour would be well deserving in the future, as he has plans to reposition the state’s health sector.
The governor, who stressed the need to improve the healthcare system, said primary healthcare was the bedrock of a viable services delivery in the state. He noted that it was unfair for government to leave healthcare services in the hands of doctors alone, stressing that his government was ready to invest in healthcare.
While expressing government’s readiness to train doctors, he said the state was committed to training of health personnel in the 18 local councils of Edo, beginning with no fewer than 20 doctors.Speaking, Chairman of the event, Dr. Osagie Dawodu, told the medical experts to resolve the lingering feud among members of the NMA, insisting there were factions in the body.
“You must come together to unite and move NMA forward. Effective leaders bring good healthcare services, which NMA should provide to create a leading role in healthcare system,” he said.
Edo State Chairman of NMA, Dr. Emmanuel Osaigbovo, said the State Officers Committee and doctors in the state were poised to partner with all relevant stakeholders to develop healthcare delivery system in the state.
Meanwhile, a rights activist and My Radio FM presenter, Obidinma Aku, has rejected an award, which would have been presented to him at the weekend.Aku, also known as Activist on Radio, said he had gone to the venue in Owerri, Imo State to receive the Media Personality award, organised by Arise Africa.
But when he heard the Majority Leader of the Imo State House of Assembly, under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Lugard Osuji, mentioned as one of the recipients of an award at the event, he immediately declined the offer. He said he had to leave the venue and rejected the award, accusing Osuji of incompetence and the state lawmakers of their failure to provide good governance in the state.
