To mark the 2018 International Youth Day, President, Global Centre for Drug Eradication, Keji Hamilton, has called for the inclusion of subject on dangers of drug abuse in the national school curricula.
The United Nations International Youth Day is celebrated August every year to recognise the efforts of youth in enhancing the global society.
Addressing select-group of pupils in Lagos, Hamilton lamented the increased use of drug among school children saying it is important to educate them on dangers of drug abuse, its effect on health and the community.
According to Hamilton, the International Youth Day aims to promote ways of engaging the youth in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities.
“The Youth need safe spaces where they can come together, engage in activities related to their diverse needs and interest, participate in decision-making processes and freely express themselves. Proper education is imperative and subjects that will best explain dangers of drug abuse to pupils should be integrated in the schools’ curriculum.”
Similarly, President, Youth Orientation for Development, Emmanuel Ejiogu said abuse of drugs, which is a problem among young people in Nigeria has assumed a very alarming and disturbing dimension.
“The truth is that no aspect of the society has been left out. Our homes, neighbourhoods, schools, churches and mosques are seriously being ravaged by this devouring monster. The effects can be seen in the increasing rates of violent crimes, unrest, suicides, the rise in the number of cases of insanity and other social, economic and political problems that we face today,” he said.
Ejiogu noted that government is not doing enough, enjoining them to strengthen the necessary agency to properly checkmate the sale of illicit drug, increase security in area of importation, and do proper checking in the seaports and airports.
“The government should provide enough rehabilitation centres for the already affected individuals and increase publicity so as to explain the effects and dangers of the drug abuse,” he added.
