NPC to pick 2019 presidential candidate from Northeast

The Presidency yesterday urged the National Assembly to dwell more on issues of national interest rather that engage in the subterfuge and drama being played out in the nation’s parliament.

Basking in the euphoria of the All Progressives Congress (APC) victory during the National Assembly by-elections in Bauchi, Katsina and Kogi states at the weekend, it said Nigerians were no longer interested in the unfolding drama in the legislature.

It, therefore, urged the National Assembly to join hands with the President Muhammadu Buhari administration in the onerous task of delivering dividends of democracy to the people.

Addressing State House Correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the President, Garba Shehu, dismissed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) allegations of votes buying during the by-elections.He urged the party to toe the path of honour and accept the outcome of the election rather than conduct their affairs like a militant organisation.

“It is appropriate this time to appeal to the National Assembly to collaborate with President Buhari to ensure that we can deliver on all of these things. There are urgent matters that need to be attended to including shortfall in money supply for execution of the 2018 budget,” he stated.

Also, the Presidency disclosed that the government has lunched a micro-credit scheme in Lagos State where market women will be given N10,000 repayable loan.Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Acting President Yemi Osinbajo, Laolu Akande said 500,000 persons are expected to benefit from the new tranche of Social Investment Programme (SIP), adding that the revolving loan, which are free of collateral will be repaid within six months.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Peoples Congress (NPC) has resolved to pick its presidential and vice presidential candidates for the 2019 general elections from the Northeast and Southeast zones of the country. Speaking to newsmen in Kaduna, its National Chairman, Suleiman Akasawua, said the party’s decision was aimed at ensuring justice, fairness, equity and to give a sense of belonging to each geographical zone in the leadership of the country. He enjoined Nigerians to participate actively in next year’s general elections by ensuring that they obtain their permanent voter cards (PVCs).
