• Six die, others injured in Rivers auto crash
The United Nations has appointed Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as an advisory board member of the United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund (UNRSTF) in Geneva, Switzerland.
Amaechi, currently representing Nigeria and Africa at the inaugural meeting of the board at the UN Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland, is expected to play an important role of collaborating to reduce accidents and casualties and making a real impact on global road safety.
However, a statement signed by Special Assistant on Media to the Minister, Israel Ibeleme, said the discussions and decisions at the meeting would greatly shape the operationalisation of the UN Road Safety Trust Fund.
In another development, no fewer than six persons were feared dead and several others injured in a ghastly accident involving a commercial bus and a truck at Emohua, Rivers State.
It was gathered that the commercial bus travelling to Lagos from Port Harcourt with about 14 passengers on board, rammed into the truck and burst into flames along the East-West road in Emohua yesterday.
Some of the victims of the accident were burnt beyond recognition. A naval personnel and five others were said to have died on the spot. Other passengers on board the bus who survived the accident are however said to be in critical condition.
A source at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital confirmed that some of the victims who were critically injured were rushed to the emergency unit of the hospital shortly after the accident.
