Nigeria president, Muhammadu Buhari has said it will be a betrayal of public trust if he wavers on his commitment to fight corruption.

Buhari, as an aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015, had his campaign centred around  growing the economy, improving security and the fight against corruption.

“Even if some people hate you for fighting corruption, you should not chicken out from the task as a leader because doing so is a betrayal of public trust,” Buhari said in his Eid-el Kabir message.

According to him, no amount of criticism and hatred will make him relent in the war against corruption, insisting that doing that is a “betrayal of public trust”.

The President further said fighting corruption was a task that must be done in order to protect the larger interests of the ordinary Nigerians whom he said were the worst victims of diseases, poverty, malnutrition and other afflictions.

Buhari noted that surrendering to corruption was not an option because it destroyed society and progress of nations.

He explained that religion was a major factor in influencing human behaviour towards good conduct and action, adding that people have forsaken their religious beliefs in the pursuit of selfishness, greed and corruption.

Buhari assured Nigerians that the country’s economic challenges were temporary, as the people’s welfare is the focal point of his administration’s change agenda.

He urged Nigerians to rise above personal, group, sectarian and other interests, and promote harmony and tolerance in dealing with one another.

The President is currently in his home town Daura, Katsina state to celebrate this year’s Eid-el Kabir.
