The Nigerian Army has killed scores of Boko Haram insurgents who ‘mistakenly’ attacked a military base in Damasak, Borno State. The Army spokesperson, Brig-Gen. Texas Chukwu, in a statement yesterday in Maiduguri, said the terrorists attempted to attack the military formation at 6p.m. on Wednesday, but were outsmarted by the ‘gallant troops’.
Prior to the attempt, he said the officers received the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, at Damasak, before proceeding to Gudumbali, which was also attacked last Friday by insurgents.
Chukwu said: “The troops engaged and subdued the terrorists following a superior firepower that lasted for four hours in Damasak.“The troops’ aggressive posture, tactics and marksmanship resulted in the neutralising of many Boko Haram terrorists.” He, however, denied reports that Damasak was taken over by terrorists.
According to him, the “Nigerian Army wishes to state categorically that the claim is not only untrue but capable of misleading members of the public and the world at large.”
