Bayero University

Controversy surrounding land acquisition and counterclaims of compensation between Bayero University, Kano and some farm owners is generating tension.

The university claims to have acquired and duly settled required compensation to farmland owners in the 1970s and early 1980s but some owners of the settlements are demanding compensation, insisting their lands were never included in any compensation by the university.

Some of the affected communities seeking for compensation are Rimin-gata, Rijiyar-zaki, Rimi-zakara, Dausayi, and Jajira.

Sequel to the controversy, Bayero University on Wednesday constituted an ad-hoc committee to address all controversies surrounding the acquisition and counterclaims by the communities.

The committee consists of representatives of Kano State Bureaucrats for Land Management, Kano Urban Planning and Development Agency, Kano Emirate Council, Commissioner of Police, Ungogo Local Government Councils, District head of Ungogo and members of the university community.

Addressing newsmen at the inauguration of the committee, Deputy Vice Chancellor, who is also the chairman land implementation committee of the institution, Prof. Adamu Idris Tanko, said part of the terms of reference was for the committee to determine the authenticity and dialogue with those that were affected in the land controversy.

Tanko said the land was acquired in 10 phases, cutting across areas under the control of 10 village heads, and of which the university authority has paid compensations for the farmlands and economic trees to the farm owners.

He added that the university was finding it difficult to establish four new African center of excellence on dry land agriculture for national and global ranking and recognition.

Although the university claimed to have paid compensation on two occasions, with the recent settlement paid in 2007, but the chairman of the committee was silent on how much was actually paid.
