The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has decried the rising violence against children in Nigeria. At a workshop for traditional rulers yesterday in Calabar, the Child Protection Specialist, UNICEF Nigeria, Enugu Field Office, Mrs. Nkiru Maduechesi, said the indicators on violence against male and female children “are mind-boggling for any government to worry about.”

The event was put together by the global agency in collaboration with the Cross River State Ministry of Women Affairs and Department of Chieftaincy Affairs.
She said the indicators, in a national survey conducted in 1914 by the National Population Commission (NPC), have it that “one out of six girls suffer sexual exploitation and one out of 10 boys suffer sexual exploitation” in the country.

On Cross River, the UNICEF official said: “Survey has it that violent disciplinary method is about 90 per cent in every family, adopting corporal punishment as a punitive measure.”
