Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole

Medical doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) may go on strike next week over failure of the Federal Government to reconstitute the Council of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) three years after its dissolution.

MDCN is the regulatory body for all medical doctors in Nigeria and is in charge of registration, de-registration and discipline of doctors and hospitals in the country.

The NMA said the unregulated health sector has led to increasing rate of brain drain, medical tourism, quackery, poor treatment outcomes and health indices and called on political gladiators to endeavour to make health a key agenda in their political manifestos.

NMA in a statement yesterday signed by the President, Francis Adedayo Faduyile, and Secretary-General, Olumuyiwa Peter Odusote, said the National Meeting of NMA held between August 26, 2018 and September 1, 2018 in Osogbo gave an ultimatum to the Government to reconstitute the Council on or before September 30, 2018 being six weeks after President Buhari promised to set up the council ‘soon’ during their courtesy visit to him.
